Single phase or three phase: what your home can actually charge at
Most Melbourne homes have a single-phase supply, which supports a 7 kW charger. That adds roughly 40 km of range per hour and fills a typical EV overnight, which is all most drivers ever need. Homes with a three-phase supply can run a 22 kW charger, which is three times faster but only useful if your car can accept it; many EVs cap AC charging at 7 or 11 kW regardless.
Before quoting we check what supply you have, how much spare capacity is on the switchboard, and where the charger will sit relative to the board. That last part matters more than people expect: a 40-metre cable run to a detached garage is a different job from a charger next to the meter box, and we would rather tell you that upfront than on the day.
Chargers we install
We fit the Tesla Wall Connector, myenergi Zappi, Ocular and BYD chargers regularly, and can install most other brands if you have already bought one with the car. If you are choosing, the honest advice is this: the Tesla unit is the neatest if you drive a Tesla; the Zappi is the pick if you have solar, because it can charge from your excess solar only; Ocular is good value for a straightforward install.
Every install gets its own dedicated circuit and RCD protection, is tested before we leave, and comes with a Certificate of Electrical Safety as required in Victoria. If your switchboard cannot safely take the extra load, we will tell you and price the upgrade separately, rather than quietly overloading an old board.
Load management, solar and future-proofing
Dynamic load management lets the charger throttle itself when the rest of the house is drawing heavily, so you can install a full-power charger without upgrading your supply. It is often the difference between a one-day job and a much bigger one, and we will tell you when it makes sense.
If you have solar, or are planning it, say so when you ask for a quote. Some chargers integrate with the inverter and some do not, and it is far cheaper to choose the right one now than to swap later.

How long does an EV charger installation take?
A standard home install with the charger near the switchboard is usually done in half a day. Longer cable runs, a garage on a separate building, or a switchboard upgrade can push that to a full day.
Do I need a switchboard upgrade to install an EV charger?
Not always. If the board has spare capacity and modern circuit breakers, a charger can usually go straight in. Older boards with ceramic fuses or no safety switches generally do need upgrading first, and we will tell you which applies to yours when we quote.
Can I install an EV charger if I only have single-phase power?
Yes. A single-phase supply runs a 7 kW charger, which fully charges most EVs overnight. Three phase is only worth adding if you regularly need to charge faster than that.
Can my EV charger run off my solar?
With the right charger, yes. The Zappi in particular can be set to charge only from excess solar, so daytime charging costs you nothing. Tell us you have solar when you ask for a quote and we will recommend accordingly.
